Little orange pebble in an Autumn puddle of water with grass growing out of the pavement in the background

Another day started in “The Daily Stoic.” I’m reminded today of the interconnectedness and mutual interdependence of all things.

A bit I love about today’s reflection is taken directly from the book.

“Anne Lamont once observed that all writers ‘are little rivers running into one lake,’ all contributing to the same big project.”

– The Daily Stoic, excerpt from October 3rd reading [1]

Why do I love this? Recently, my mom said to me,

“Well, look at how things turned out. Who knew you would be a writer?”

-Best mom ever, said in the most loving way possible

I was taken aback. A writer? LOL, no, I’m just an aspiring web developer planning to document my woodworking journey who happens to be writing about my life experiences and my quest to transcend trauma and the confines of my subconscious behaviors and lizard brain. I’m not a writer, though, or am I now? Hmm. I suppose that is precisely what I’m doing, quite unexpectedly.

So, this very much put a smile on my face today. My most genuine intentions are to add my drop of water to the awakening pool, my little flame to the light that is getting brighter and brighter.

Before diving into my reading today, I was visualizing all the humans in my life awakening to their highest selves today. How fitting that I am reminded to remember that we are all connected and that perhaps my little attempt at being “a writer” might add to the lake from which we all draw life. I’m truly filled with joy and gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the connection. I am definitely adding this rock to my pocket today.

  1. The interconnectedness of writing and woodworking is expression. Whether you put it into the words of a finely polished tale or a highly polished table, you are expressing your ideas through action. Music, sketching web design are all expressions as much as putting together a savory meal, building a house or making a dress – all of it is poetry and in the end a reflection of your character.

Vince Lombardi once said; “The measure of who we are, is what we do with what we have.” You, who have risen through the trauma and disillusion, the let downs and setbacks, tested by fire and fury, have emerged from the ashes stronger and more refined. That is how metal is tempered. What shape that metal is forged into is the person you are now; strong and determined, sharp and purpose-built, not for revenge or malice, but for love, grace and beauty. By fusing those drops of water, the lights, the rocks, the gratitude into Wisdom, Courage, Justice and Temperance, a work of art in progress, and will be whatever you want it to be. I see a classic from the Renaissance in the making. Keep it going!

    1. Your beautiful words humble me. You said it perfectly: expression. It is interesting how deeply expression can help us thrive. I have been so lucky to have such wise and knowledgeable people in my life to help me learn. What a powerful picture you have painted of this human experience. I’m honored. Thank you for being part of the journey!
